CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's tennis team lost to Clemson 6-1 on Saturday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Carolina junior Aniela Mojzis, ranked 28th nationally, upset #8 Julie Coin 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 1 seed match for the Tar Heels only point of the day.
With the loss to #16 Clemson, the #12 Tar Heels finish the regular season 18-7 overall and 4-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tigers (18-3, 7-0 ACC) will play also undefeated Duke on Sunday.
In doubles play, Clemson took two of three matches for the point. At the No. 1 seed and last match to finish, the UNC junior duo #23 Mojzis and Kendall Cline defeated Coin and Alix Lacelarie 9-7 to go to 24-9 on the season and 7-1 in the ACC. With each win, Cline and Mojzis add to their record for most doubles wins in a season in Tar Heel history.
In the No. 2 match, Daniela Alvarez and Maria Brito of Clemson beat the UNC seniors Lee Bairos and Kendrick Bunn. The Carolina duo dropped their first ACC match of the season and fall to 8-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
To clinch the doubles point for the Tigers, Karen Rombouts and Richele LeSaldo took UNC freshmen Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long 8-4 at the No. 3 seed. Anundsen and Long lose their first ACC match as they fall to 10-3 overall, 6-1 in the ACC.
In singles play, after Mojzis upset Coin, UNC went on to drop the matches at seeds one through five. The one of the two last matches to finish, Bairos took #84 Alvarez to three sets at the No. 2 seed. The Tar Heel fought back from a first-set 6-1 loss to win the second 6-4, but then fell in the third 6-4.
In the last match of the day, Long also went three sets with Iona Paun of Clemson. Long took the first set 6-3, but then failed to win a game in the second. She fought back in the third but lost the set in a tiebreak at four points.
The Tar Heels now wait to see which seed they will play as in the ACC Tournament to be held at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C., on April 15-18. UNC should finish with the middle group of teams in conference standings.
