RALEIGH, N.C. - The 14th-ranked University of North Carolina women's tennis team captured its 19th win of the season, defeating No. 39 Georgia Tech 4-1 Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Tennis Championship at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center.
"We have a lot of respect for Georgia Tech, and to beat a tough team two times in one week is an extraordinary effort," said UNC Head Coach Brian Kalbas.
Carolina, the fourth seed in the tournament, will meet top-seeded Clemson Saturday at 10 a.m. in the ACC semifinals. The Tar Heels lost to Clemson 6-1 in their final regular season match on April 10. The winner of Saturday's match advances to the championship match on Sunday at 11 a.m.
"Clemson is one of the better teams we've played," said Kalbas. "We're excited to get another chance at them."
The Tar Heels took the doubles point after victories at the No. 1 and 2 seeds. The junior tandem of Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline, ranked 23rd in the nation, grabbed their 25th win of the season after defeating Kelly Anderson and Sekita Grant 8-2. Since playing together as freshmen, the pair have now compiled an overall record of 59-21 and 20-4 in the ACC.
At the No. 2 seed, seniors Lee Bairos and Kendrick Bunn clinched the doubles point with their 8-0 victory over Georgia Tech's Maria Nieto and Lyndsay Shosho. The pair move to 9-2 on the season.
In singles action, Jenna Long clinched the match after beating the Yellow Jackets' Maria Nieto 6-3, 7-6. Long moves to 19-9 on the season.
Mojzis, ranked 28th nationally, defeated #57 Shosho for the second time in eight days, 6-3, 6-1. The win was the junior's 25th on the season.
Cline avenged her regular season loss to Alison Silverio with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the No. 4 seed. Cline improves to 20-13 on the season.
Georgia Tech gained its only point of the match at No. 3 singles as Lindsey Stauss downed Tar Heel freshman Caitlin Collins, 6-2, 7-5.
