Geoff Boyd Named Waterscapes Student-Athlete Of The Week

Geoff Boyd won two singles and doubles matches to lead the UNC men's tennis to a share of the ACC regular-season title and is the Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete of the Week for April 5-11, 2004.
MEN'S TENNIS

oyd, a junior from Atlanta, Ga., went 2-0 in both singles and doubles as the No. 14 Tar Heels clinched a share of the ACC regular season championship, the team's first since 1996. In a 5-2 loss to fifth-ranked Duke, Boyd had Carolina's only singles win as he defeated Jonathan Stokke 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Against No. 33 Florida State, Boyd downed Joe Bassett of the Seminoles 7-6, 6-0. Boyd's two wins in singles brought his dual match singles mark to 21-1 this spring. He has won 12 in a row and the only loss was in three sets to Ben Atkinson of South Carolina. He is 30-4 overall this year, including tournament play. oyd also combined with Nick Monroe in doubles this week to beat two nationally-ranked teams. They defeated No. 5 Ludovic Walter and Jason Zimmerman of Duke 9-7 and No. 19 Chris Westerhof and Jeff Groslimond of Florida State 8-3.

Paul Spellman had 13 saves while allowing nine goals as No. 5 North Carolina beat Virginia for the first time since 2001 by an 11-9 score to improve to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. He also had five ground balls as Carolina broke a four-game losing streak at the hands of the Wahoos. Spellman's play in the second half sparked UNC to the come-from-behind win. With Virginia leading 7-6 in the third quarter, Spellman held the Cavaliers scoreless for nearly 22 minutes while saving nine successive Wahoo shots on net as Carolina went on a 5-0 scoring run to take an 11-7 lead and eventually go on to the victory.
BASEBALL

Cox hit .533 (8-for-15) with two home runs, three doubles and eight runs batted in as the Tar Heels went 2-2 on the week. He also posted a slugging percentage of 1.133. With three RBI against Charlotte and Georgia Tech, Cox tied his career high in back-to-back games. Against the 49ers on Wednesday, he went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. In game one of the Georgia Tech series, Cox put the Tar Heels up 2-0 with a two-run homer in the first inning. In the 9-7 Carolina win, he was 2-for-3 with the homer, two walks and two runs scored. In Saturday's loss Cox was 2-for-5 with an RBI and two doubles. He followed that up with an inside-the-park home run in a 2-for-4 effort Sunday. On the year, Cox ranks second on the team with a .370 average and has two homers and 18 RBI.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Aniela Mojzis

North Carolina's No. 1 seed, #28 junior Aniela Mojzis, upset Clemson's #8 Julie Coin 6-1, 6-3 on Saturday. Mojzis claimed the #12 Tar Heels' only point in the 6-1 loss to the #16 Tigers. Mojzis also defeated #57 Lyndsay Shosho of Georgia Tech 6-2, 6-0 on Friday in the Tar Heels' 5-2 win over the #39 Yellow Jackets. Mojzis and junior Kendall Cline, who are 23rd in the nation, also grabbed two wins this weekend. The No. 1 seeded pair beat Georgia Tech's Kelly Anderson and Sekita Grant 8-4 and Clemson's Julie Coin and Alix Lacelarie 9-7.
SOFTBALL
Dionne Streete

Streete hit three home runs this weekend in leading UNC to a 3-1 record versus N.C. State and Maryland. She hit a walk-off, game-winning home run in the eighth inning in a 3-2 win over N.C. State. Streete followed that performance up with a solo home run in a 1-0 win over Maryland as she won the game again for the Tar Heels. For the season, Streete is averaging .348 with eight home runs and 26 RBI's and leads the ACC in doubles with 17.
WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
Erin Donohue

Donohue competed in two events at the Carolina Fast Times this weekend, winning the javelin event and placing second in the 800-meters. Donohue threw for a mark of 136-01 to win the javelin throw and in the 800-meters placed second with a time of 2:08.82. Her time in the 800-meters qualified her for the NCAA Regionals. She has now qualified for the NCAA Regionals in two events, the 800-meters and 1,500-meters.
MEN'S TRACK & FIELD
Nick Owens

Owens won two events at the Carolina Fast Times meet this past weekend. He threw 199-0 in the hammer setting his collegiate personal record and the top ACC mark in the hammer this year. Owens also placed first in the discus as he threw for a mark of 154-00. Owens has qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the hammer throw and is in the top five in the ACC in both the discus and hammer throw events.
MEN'S GOLF
Kevin Silva
Sophomore
New Bedford, Mass.
Carolina's Kevin Silva, a sophomore on the golf team, tied for seventh place at last weekend's Courtyard By Marriott Intercollegiate. Silva fired three sub-par rounds - he carded a one-under 71 in the first and second rounds and posted a two-under 70 in the final round for a four-under 212 total. He lead the way for the Tar Heels who finished in ninth place. The 54-hole event was played at MacGregor Downs Country Club, a par 72, 6,867-yard layout, in Cary.
