CHAPEL HILL -- Gymnast Courtney Bumpers tied for the national championship in the floor exercise and the UNC women's track and field team completed a sweep of the ACC championships to earn Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete and Team of the Week honors for April 12-18, 2004.
umpers, a sophomore from Stone Mountain, Ga., earned a 9.9375 in the national individual floor exercise finals to tie for first place, bringing back the first national title in the history of the UNC gymnastics program. Bumpers was a first team All-America for the second time in her career and the first time on floor exercise after the preliminary round of the 2004 NCAA Gymnastics Championships Thursday. She was the only individual competitor to advance to the event finals, where she shared a championship spot on floor with Alabama's Ashley Miles. Her all-around score of 39.45 in the preliminary round was the highest of the 12 individual competitors and good enough for 15th place.
The North Carolina women's track & field team became just the second team in ACC history to win the "triple crown" as they won the 2004 ACC outdoor title on Saturday. The team won this school year's cross country, indoor and outdoor ACC titles to achieve the triple crown status. The only other team to accomplish the feat was the 1994-1995 UNC squad. The women's team won the 2004 outdoor title with 186.5 points, more than 40 points ahead of second-place Georgia Tech. Junior Laura Gerraughty led the team with two individual titles as she won the shot put and discus events. Sophomore Carol Henry (3,000-meter steeplechase), senior Tiffany Flomo (400-meter hurdles) and senior Amy Parulis (hammer throw) also brought home individual ACC titles for the team. The Tar Heel women have now won four-straight outdoor ACC team titles and 14 of the last 17.
