Bumpers Named Waterscapes Student-Athlete of the Week

Courtney Bumpers became the first Tar Heel gymnast to qualify for a second time to the NCAA Championships and is the Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete of the Week for March 29-April 4, 2004.
A sophomore from Stone Mountain, Ga., Bumpers earned a trip to nationals for the second straight year by placing third in the all-around at the 2004 Southeast Regional Gymnastics Championships. Named the 2004 Southeast Region Athlete of the Year Friday, Bumpers led Carolina to a third place finish at regionals. The Tar Heels, 196.350 was the highest score by any Carolina gymnastics team at a regional meet. The No. 1 gymnast in the country on floor exercise, umpers landed a regional title on the event with a first-place score of 9.95. She also garnered a 9.90 on balance beam to tie for third place. Bumpers is one of only three gymnasts in school history to advance to the NCAA National Championships and the only one to do so twice. Stacy Kaplan (1986) and Anna Wilson (2003) previously qualified.

Varsity eight
UNC's varsity eight won both of its races Saturday in Bloomington, Ind. The Tar Heels defeated Eastern Michigan in the morning race and beat Cincinnati and Dayton in the afternoon. Competing in the varsity eight were Terry McCloskey (coxswain), Rebecca ennett, Julie Domina, Jen Cox, Grace Wallenborn, Michelle Hall, Jess Ziebell, Sarah Stargel and Clara Leigh
SOFTBALL
Emily Price
Senior, Shorststop
Decatur, Ill.
Price led UNC to a doubleheader sweep of Virginia this past weekend as the Tar Heels started conference play on a winning note by winning 3-1, 7-2. Price went 4-7 with a home run and three runs scored in the two games. She broke open a 1-1 tie in the first game against UVa, as she hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to put UNC ahead for good. In the 7-2 win, Price broke open a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning as she hit a RBI single to make it 3-2 and spark a five-run inning. For the season Price is second in the ACC in batting average with a .412 mark and second in home runs with nine.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Laura Gerraughty

Gerraughty competed at the Texas Relays this weekend in the discus and hammer throw events. She placed second in the discus with a personal record throw of 174-04. Gerraughty placed third in the hammer throw with a toss of 200-11. Both marks are the top throws in their respective events in the ACC this season.
BASEBALL

Iannetta batted .538 (7-for-13) to lead the Tar Heels to their first sweep of Wake Forest since the ACC went to three-game series in 1990. With a team-best seven hits on the weekend, he extended his career-long hitting streak to 18 games. Iannetta also added five runs scored, four runs batted in, a home run and three doubles. He also posted an on-base percentage of .625 for the series. Defensively, Iannetta had an errorless weekend and threw out two of four attempted base stealers. After hitting his sixth homer of the year Friday, he doubled home the go-ahead run in the ninth in Saturday's 7-3 win. Sunday he recorded three hits for the third time this season. On the year, Iannetta leads Carolina with a .387 average and 12 doubles and ranks second with six home runs and 33 RBI.
MEN'S TENNIS
Nick Monroe

Nick Monroe went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles as the North Carolina men's tennis team remained the only undefeated team in ACC play last week with a 6-1 win over No. 42 Wake Forest and a 5-2 upset win at No. 12 Virginia, handing the Cavaliers only their second overall loss of the season and their first in the ACC. Monroe, ranked 31st nationally in singles, defeated No. 37 Derrick Spice of Wake Forest 6-4, 6-4 to spark the Tar Heels' win over the Demon Deacons. Combining with Geoff Boyd, Monroe defeated Spice and Todd Paul 8-3 in doubles play in the match. Going into the match at Virginia which was 16-1 overall and 5-0 in the ACC, Monroe and oyd were ranked No. 21 in doubles. They scored a significant win in doubles over No. 14 ranked Rylan Rizza and Nick Meythaler of Virginia 8-3. Monroe then went on to upset Doug Stewart of the Cavaliers, the nation's 21st-ranked singles player, 6-7, 7-5, 7-5 in a come-from-behind singles win that sparked the Tar Heel triumph. UNC won all three of the singles match that went to three sets against UVa. Carolina is now 20-2 overall, its best start since 1978, and 6-0 in the ACC. U
SARA ANUNDSEN
Womens' Tennis
Freshman, Littleton, Colo.
Freshman tennis player Sara Anundsen went 3-0 last week in Atlantic Coast Conference play to help the Tar Heels to its three-match conference win streak. Anundsen played the No. 4 seed against NC State and beat Jennifer Jassawalla 6-3, 6-1. The Tar Heel then went on to take Virginia's Shannon Stough 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 5 match. To wrap up the week, Anundsen defeated Maryland's Masha Senic 7-5, 6-1, also as the No. 5 seed. During the three-match span, Anundsen also won two doubles matches with fellow freshman Jenna Long. NC plays at No. 6 Duke Wednesday and at No. 29 Florida State Saturday.
