SALEM, Va. - North Carolina right-hander Daniel Bard earned Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year honors and was one of five Tar Heels to receive all-league accolades at the 2004 ACC Baseball Championship Banquet Monday at the Salem Civic Center. Bard, outfielder Marshall Hubbard and catcher Chris Iannetta were selected to the first team, while starting pitcher Andrew Miller and infielder Greg Mangum were named to the second team. The league's nine head coaches voted on the award winners.
Carolina's first Freshman of the Year since Adam Greenberg in 2000, Bard leads the Tar Heels with an 8-3 record and ranks second on the team with a 3.37 earned run average. He ranks fourth in the league in wins, seventh in ERA and seventh in innings pitcher per appearance (6.10). A first-team all-league selection, Bard also has 62 strikeouts against just 25 walks and leads the staff with 85.1 innings pitched.
A first-team outfielder, Hubbard leads the Tar Heels with a .358 average, 15 home runs and 69 runs batted in. He tops the ACC in RBI and his season total ranks as the fifth-best in program history. Hubbard stands among the league's top 10 in seven offensive categories.
Iannetta grabbed the first-team catcher spot thanks to a fine all-around season. He ranks second on the team with a .332 average, 12 homers and 61 RBI. Defensively, Iannetta has thrown out 22-of-44 attempted base-stealers and has picked off nine runners. He owns a .988 fielding percentage.
Mangum earned an at-large spot on the second team. He is fourth on the team with a .311 average and has two homers and 16 RBI. Mangum leads the team with 13 stolen bases and is tied for second on the team with 48 runs scored. He has started at both second base and shortstop for the Tar Heels.
Miller claimed a second-team starting pitcher spot after leading Carolina's starters with a 2.62 ERA, which ranked third in the league. He is currently 5-2 on the year and ranks second in the league with a .195 opponent batting average and fifth with 9.04 strikeouts per nine innings.
Carolina's five all-conference players are the program's most since 2000 and the Tar Heels had three first-team honorees for the first time since 1990.
The fifth-seeded Tar Heels open the 2004 ACC Baseball Championship against No. 4 seed Clemson at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
