Bard Named Freshmen All-America

TUSCON, Ariz. - North Carolina right-hander Daniel Bard was named to the 2004 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-America Team as chosen by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, the publication announced Friday. Bard went 8-4 on the year with a 3.88 earned run average. He worked a team-high 95 innings with 68 strikeouts against 31 walks.
In additon to being named the Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, Bard became the first Carolina starting pitcher to earn first-team all-conference honors since current Tar Heel pitching coach Roger Williams in 1985. Bard was also chosen for the USA Baseball National Team Trials, set for June 20-26 in Durham.
ard joined classmate Robert Woodard with eight wins on the year, as both equaled the school record for victories by a freshman. Andrew Miller also won six games, as 22 of the Tar Heels' 43 wins this season came from rookie hurlers.
