CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Nick Monroe, a senior from Olathe, Kan., was named Friday a first-team All-America by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, Carolina's first All-America in men's tennis since Tripp Phillips was so honored in 2000. Monroe, only the second Tar Heel player in history to pass the 100 mark in career singles victories, earned All-America honors in singles this year after reaching the NCAA quarterfinals in singles. Phillips was also the last Tar Heel to reach the NCAA singles quarterfinals, doing so in 2000.
Monroe was a three-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference choice as a Tar Heel and he led Carolina to NCAA Tournament appearances in each of his four years as Carolina. He captained the 2004 Tar Heel team which shared the ACC regular season championship and he also played on the 2002 UNC team which captured the ACC Tournament title.
As a senior, Monroe finished No. 21 in the final singles rankings issued by the ITA. He and junior Geoff Boyd finished the year ranked No. 17 nationally in doubles. As a team, Carolina finished 17th in the ITA rankings and was the No. 11 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
