WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The North Carolina field hockey team opened the 2004 season Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 win over Michigan at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, hosted by Wake Forest. Junior Karen Mann scored twice for the Tar Heels and senior Kelsey Keeran had a goal and an assist.
Michigan opened the scoring on a goal by Katie Morris just over eight minutes into the game. Mann answered with her first goal, assisted by senior Laura Douglas and freshman Anne Marie Janus. After a 1-1 tie at halftime, the Wolverines again moved ahead on an unassisted goal by Adrienne Hortillosa. The Tar Heels answered with an unassisted goal by Keeran in the 45th minute then a second score by Mann, assisted by Keeran, with less than a minute remaining in regulation.
For the game, UNC outshot Michigan 24-7, 18-1 in the second half. The Tar Heels had five penalty corners to one by the Wolverines. Carolina goalkeeper Katy Tran made two saves, and UM goalkeeper Beth Riley had eight.
The Tar Heels finished the 2003 season with a 2-1 loss to Michigan in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The national poll for field hockey has not yet been released this season, but both UNC and Michigan are likely to be ranked in the top five.
"It was a great opener for both teams," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "Michigan threw a half-court press on us in the first half that gave our young defense some trouble, and we had to come from behind and gut out the win. As the game went on we got stronger, which is always good to see. We're looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow to play Iowa."
The Tar Heels face the Hawkeyes Sunday at noon before Wake Forest and Michigan meet at 2:30 p.m. In Saturday's second game, the defending-NCAA champion Demon Deacons beat Iowa 3-2.
