
Tar Heel Harriers Sweep Wake Forest Meet

The University of North Carolina men's and women's cross country teams took first place Saturday morning at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem. The Tar Heel men, led by individual winner Brian McGovern, finished ahead of runner-up Wake Forest with 27 points. The ladies also bested the Demon Deacons, finishing with 37 points. Meghan Owen was the women's individual winner to lead Carolina.
In the men's race, which was only run over a distance of 5,000 meters, four Tar Heels finished in the top ten. McGovern's winning time was 15:12, and he was followed by Tom Falvey's 15:14. Matt Daly was sixth in 15:22, Rob Robertson was eighth in 15:27 and Jesse Rappole was tenth in 15:33. Ryan Shaver, the only other Tar Heel runner, was 25th in 16:14.
The women's leaderboard was clogged with Carolina blue and white, as all seven of the UNC runners finished in the top 17. Owen's winning time was 17:30, as she bested Wake Forest's Michelle Sikes by three seconds. Jessica Perry (17:45) and Jennie Sucher (17:56) were next, finishing sixth and seventh respectively. Alice Schmidt was 13th in 18:31 and Anna Hay was 14th in 18:37 to round out the scorers. Kerry Brewer was 15th in 18:38 and Nicole Boykin was 17th in 18:40.
