Carolina Women's Golfers In Seventh Place After Two Rounds Of Cougar Classic.

Hanahan, S.C. - Carolina's women's golf team got its fall season underway on Monday and stands in seventh place after the second round of the Cougar Classic. After firing a two-over-par 290 in the first round, the Tar Heels struggled a bit in the second round scoring a 17-over 305 for a 595 total. Tennessee leads the 16-team firld with a five-over 581 total. Louisiana State is two strokes back in second place at 583 while Virginia is in third place at 587, Furman is fourth at 588 and Wake Forest is fifth with a 589 total.
Violeta Retamoza of Tennessee grabbed the individual lead with a five-under 139 total after firing rounds of 70-69. Leah Wigger of Virginia is two shots back in second place with a 141 total while LSU's Vicky Meyer and Furman's Theresa Palk are tied for third place with 142 totals.
Two Tar Heels are in the top 20. Freshman Ann Laney, from Charlotte, N.C., fired a two-under 70 followed by a 76 for a two-over 146 total and is tied for 10th place while Katie Miller, from Jeannette, Pa., carded a pair of 74s for a 148 total and is tied for 19th place. Beth Marushak tallied a 150 total after rounds of 72-78 and is tied for 26th place and Romi Irons and Shannon Boyle posted 154 totals and are tied for 46th place. Laura Caniff, playing as an individual, is tied for 40th with a 153 total.
The final round of the 54-hole event will be played Tuesday at Yeamans Hall with features a par 72, 6,031-yard layout.
