After opening its season with six road games, the North Carolina field hockey team returned home to earn 1-0 win over No. 7 Old Dominion Saturday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The No. 3 Tar Heels improved to 7-0 with the win, while ODU fell to 3-2.
"We've made it a goal to defend our home field this season, so we feel good about getting a win in our first game here," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We'd like to score more, but getting a shutout win is always a positive thing."
The game's lone goal came with 30:48 to play. Junior Naomi Weatherald broke a scoreless tie with her first goal of the season. She was assisted by seniors Katy Potter and Laura Douglas on the penalty corner goal.
For the game, UNC had 14 shots to ODU's three and 12 corners to five by the Lady Monarchs. Carolina goalkeeper Katy Tran had two saves in UNC's fourth shutout of the season.
The Tar Heels return to action on Sunday with another home game, this one against No. 10 Virginia (5-1). The 1 p.m. contest opens Atlantic Coast Conference play for both teams.
