DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina's women's soccer team limited Georgia to only one shot on goal Sunday afternoon as the top-ranked Tar Heels recorded their sixth shutout in eight matches this season, beating the Bulldogs 3-0 in the Duke adidas Classic at Koskinen Stadium. UNC improved to 7-0-1 on the season as Carolina prepares for its 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference opener Friday at 7 p.m. against Maryland at Fetzer Field. Georgia fell to 2-3-2 on the season.
UNC got the game-winning goal from Elizabeth Guess, a sophomore midfielder who headed in the deciding tally at the 17:54 mark of the match. It was fitting Guess scored the game-winner as she hails from Athens, Ga., home of the University of Georgia. It was Guess' first goal of the 2004 season as she took a pass from the left side by junior forward Lindsay Tarpley and finished the scoring opportunity. Sophomore forward Heather O'Reilly also assisted on the play.
Carolina extended its lead to 2-0 at 38:30 of the match as senior forward Anne Morrell scored her first goal of the campaign, assisted by senior defender Sara Randolph. UNC finished its scoring at 55:53 as freshman striker Jaime Gilbert recorded her fifth goal of the season. Tarpley took a shot that was saved by Georgia goalie Ashley Lindley, who finished with 11 saves, but Gilbert pounced on the rebound to finish the scoring in the match.
Overall, UNC outshot the Bulldogs 28-5 including a 16-1 margin in shots on goal. Lindley had 11 saves for UGA and the Bulldogs also had two team saves. Aly Winget went all 90 minutes in goal for Carolina and made one save. She has now recorded five solo shutouts for the Tar Heels and the team has six shutouts in its first eight matches, allowing only three goals so far.
From here on out the Tar Heels will play nothing but league matches including two next weekend. UNC hosts Maryland at home Friday and then plays Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. next Sunday.
