No. 6 ODU Rallies Past Tar Heels, 3-2

NORFOLK, Va. - Despite grabbing a two-goal advantage in the 68th minute of play, the North Carolina men's soccer team was unable to hold off a late rally by No. 6 Old Dominion and fell to the Monarchs by a 3-2 score Tuesday at ODU Soccer Stadium. With the loss, the Tar Heels drop to 1-3-2 on the year, while Old Dominion remains unbeaten at 5-0-0.
With the match knotted at two, the Monarchs' Edson Elcock netted the game-winning goal, off a Kevon Harris assist with just over 30 seconds remaining in the match. Kyle Hartley, who also scored ODU's first goal, had tied the game just two minutes earlier off a feed from Ian Kaila.
Sophomore Corey Ashe put Carolina up 1-0 at the 32:41 mark with his third goal of the season off a Marcus Storey assist. Storey later lifted the Tar Heels to the 2-0 lead with a goal of his own in the 68th minute. Freshman Dax McCarty set up Storey's goal with his third assist of the year. Storey now leads UNC with eight points this season on two goals and four assists.
Sophomore Justin Hughes made his second consecutive start in goal for the Tar Heels. He made six saves, while ODU keeper Jon Connelly made just one. The Monarchs outshot Carolina, 17-9, for the match.
Carolina returns home to Fetzer Field for its Atlantic Coast Conference opener against No. 12 Virginia Sunday at 2 p.m.
