COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sophomore Corey Ashe scored an unassisted goal in the 85th minute to lift the No. 6 North Carolina men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Ohio State Sunday in the final game of the Ohio State Classic at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
With the Tar Heels (1-0-1) facing their second consecutive overtime match, Ashe made an open-field takeaway and then connected on the game-winner at the 84:43 mark. He also scored Carolina's lone goal against Penn State Friday.
Carolina also led 1-0, as freshman midfielder Dax McCarty put the Tar Heels on the board at the 19:51 mark of the first half. He took a pass from senior forward Marcus Storey, who now has two assists on the young season, and buried an eight-yard shot into the back left corner of the net. McCarty's goal was the first of his collegiate career.
The Tar Heel lead was short-lived as Ohio State's Xavier Balc tied the score at one less than four minutes later on a penalty kick.
Junior Ford Williams played all 90 minutes in goal for the Tar Heels and made three saves. Both teams took eight shots in the match, with Carolina holding a 5-2 advantage in the second half.
Ashe, Storey and Williams each earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
The Tar Heels return to action next weekend for the annual Carolina Nike Classic. This year's event is set for Friday, September 10 and Sunday, September 12 and will feature UNC, Wake Forest, Florida International and Virginia Commonwealth. All four teams are nationally ranked.
