MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - 2000 University of North Carolina alumnus Tripp Phillips will play in his second Grand Slam singles event when he competes in the main draw of singles of the 2005 Australian Open Tuesday. Phillips, a Charlotte, N.C. native and first-team All-America at UNC in 2000, lost a three-set first round match at Wimbledon in June of 2004 in his first Grand Slam singles appearance.
Winner of the Patterson Medal as the oustanding senior athlete at Carolina in 2000, Phillips will also be paired in doubles Tuesday without Melbourne native and hometown favorite Michael Hill. The duo of Phillips and Hill will go up against the team of Mariano Hood and Martin Garcia of Argentina at 7 p.m. EST on Court 10.
Phillips is currently ranked No. 83 in the ATYP world doubles rankings and he has consistently improved on that ranking over the past couple of years on the tour.
