
No. 21 Navy Wrestling Holds Off Tar Heels, 27-10

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After falling behind 24-0 thanks to six straight losses to start the match, North Carolina (3-5, 2-1 ACC) rallied for wins in three of the final four bouts, but 21st-ranked Navy (8-3) held on for a 27-10 victory over the Tar Heels in NCAA wrestling action Saturday at Carmichael Auditorium.
With Navy holding a 24-0 advantage, sophomore Bobby Shaw got Carolina on the board with a 14-0 major decision over Navy's Brad Canterbury at 125 pounds. Shaw took a 4-0 lead in to the second period and essentially put the match away with two three-point near falls in the second. Following a 2-0 mark on the weekend, he is now 18-12 on the season and 7-1 in duals.
Junior All-America Evan Sola, ranked ninth nationally by InterMat, then trimmed the Navy lead to 24-7 with a 6-0 decision over No. 19 Sam Gray. Sola carried a 5-0 lead into the third period and added a point for riding time for the final margin. Sola is now 21-3 this season and remains a perfect 8-0 in duals. He has won his last nine matches.
Freshman Isaiah Britton kept the Tar Heel run alive with a 9-2 decision over Navy's Chris Miosi at 141, which cut the lead to 24-10. Britton, now 20-10 on the season, claimed a 3-2 lead with a takedown late in the first period and added six points over the final two frames.
No. 17 John Cox gave Navy its final points with an 8-2 decision over Carolina freshman Chris Ramos at 149.
The match started at 157 pounds, and Navy captured the first six bouts, highlighted by a technical fall by Pat Lukanich at 157 and a pin at 174 by Matt Stolpinksi. Lukanich posted a 21-5 win over the Tar Heels' Nick Royer, while Stolpinski pinned Tim Barbis at the 3:34 mark to push the lead to 14-0. Navy's Craig Dziewiattkowski won a 4-2 decision over Garrett Atkinson at 165, and Jon Kane picked up a late takedown and added one point for riding time for a 10-2 major decision over UNC freshman Justin Dobies at 184. At 197, No. 20 Thayer Paxton topped UNC junior David Dashiell, 9-2
In a meeting of two nationally-ranked wrestlers at heavyweight, No. 15 Tanner Garrett of Navy took advantage of two third-period takedowns to claim a 6-2 decision over 20th-ranked Spencer Nadolsky of Carolina. Garrett improves to 24-2 on the season with the win, while Nadolsky drops to 22-11.
Coupled with Friday's loss to NC State, the defeat by the Midshipmen gives Carolina its first three-match losing streak of the season.The Tar Heels return to Atlantic Coast Conference action at rival Duke Tuesday, February 1 at 7:30 p.m.
