
Northwestern Hands Carolina Second Straight Loss

EVANSTON, ILL. - Northwestern's 40th-ranked Wildcats handed No. 18 North Carolina its second consecutive loss of the weekend as NU defeated the Tar Heels 5-2 in men's tennis action Sunday afternoon. Northwestern improved to 4-1 on the season while North Carolina fell to 2-2. UNC's points came from singles wins at No. 2 by junior Brad Pomeroy and at No. 3 by senior Geoff Boyd.
Carolina struggled on its weekend trip to the Midwest. The Tar Heels also lost on Saturday, falling to No. 34 Notre Dame 5-2 in Notre Dame, Ind. Northwestern gained the upper hand in Sunday's match when the clinched the doubles point with a win in a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles. The Wildcats went on to win four of six singles matches, taking all of their points in straight set wins. At No. 1 singles, NU's Tommy Hanus, ranked #114, defeated UNC's Raian Luchici, ranked No. 66, 6-3, 6-3.
Pomeroy and Boyd had the wins for UNC. Pomeroy defeated Chuck Perrin at No. 2 singles 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and Boyd downed Christian Tempke at No. 3 singles, 3-6, 6-3, 3-2 (injury default).
The Tar Heels return to action next Saturday when they host Campbell and James Madison in a doubleheader at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Both matches will be played indoors. UNC and Campbell will play at 11 a.m. and the Tar Heels and the Dukes will begin their match at 5 p.m.
