Carolina Keeps Rolling, Sweeps Clemson

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- Senior outside hitter Dani Nyenhuis had 20 kills and hit .310 as the University of North Carolina volleyball team pushed its winning streak to six matches, sweeping visiting Clemson, 30-17, 30-19, 30-25, Saturday night at Carmichael Auditorium. With the win, Carolina improves to 13-6, 8-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Clemson falls to 9-7, 4-4.
The Tar Heels came out firing on all cylinders in game one, sprinting to a 12-3 lead. But the Tigers would battle back, eventually pulling within three at 16-13. Carolina would not back down, however, and a 9-0 run at 20-16 gave the hosts game point. After a Clemson side out, freshman outside hitter Lauren Prussing put down her third kill of the game to give Carolina the win, 30-17. UNC had 19 kills in the frame compared to just nine for Clemson.
The Tigers got their first lead of the match early in game two, using a 4-0 run to take a 6-4 advantage. But the Tar Heels once again used a lengthy run to take control of the game. After trailing 6-4, Carolina scored 20 of the next 27 points to lead 24-13. Clemson would close within six at 25-19, but UNC got the game's final five points to win, 30-19. For the second straight game the Tar Heels significantly out-hit their opponents, hitting .214 while holding the Tigers to an .048 mark.
Game three was the most competitive of the night, as the two teams traded long scoring runs. With UNC leading 11-8, Clemson won seven straight points to take a 15-11 lead. The Tigers would build the gap to as many as five at 19-14 before the Tar Heels won 11 of the next 14 points to move ahead 25-22 and force Clemson's final timeout. UNC got to match point at 29-25, and Nyenhuis put down her 20th and final kill of the night to secure the win.
Senior libero Taylor Rayfield once again led the defense, notching 24 digs.
The Tar Heels will be back in action next Friday as they travel to College Park, Md., to face the Maryland Terrapins.
