Carolina Tops Tribe, 3-2

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Freshman Brian Shriver scored for the third straight game, and junior Ben Hunter and freshman Scott Campbell also found the back of the net in the first 25 minutes of play to lead North Carolina (10-3-1) to a 3-2 win over William & Mary (4-7-2) Tuesday in men's soccer action at Albert-Daly Field. The Tar Heels are now a perfect 9-0-0 against non-conference opponents this year and 9-1-0 all-time against the Tribe.
Campbell's unassisted goal at 24:55 proved to be the game-winner, as William & Mary also added a pair of first half goals. All five goals came in the first 39 minutes of play, and defense took over in the second half as neither managed to score after intermission.
Hunter got the Tar Heels on the board first with an unassisted goal in the 13th minute of play. He nailed a 25-yard shot into the upper right corner of the net and now ranks second on the team with 14 points on five goals and four assists. The Tar Heel lead was short-lived, as Andres Nydal found an equalizer for the Tribe just over three minutes later on a free kick off the post.
Carolina reclaimed the lead thanks to Shriver's score at 23:46 and added a third goal just over a minute later thanks to Campbell. Both goals were unassisted, as Shriver scored on a 30-yard shot into the right side of the net. With goals in the Tar Heels' last three games, Longwood, Maryland and William & Mary, he now has four scores on the season.
Campbell's fourth game-winning goal came on a rebound of his own shot. The Plantation, Fla., native took a feed from Hunter and shot, but Tribe keeper Brennan Wergley stopped the first attempt before Campbell buried the rebound. Campbell's goal was his team-best seventh of the season and increased his team-best point total of 18.
William & Mary pulled within one goal in the 39th minute thanks to Brendan McCurdy's third score of the season off assists from Nydal and Clayton Voss, but the UNC defense buckled down the preserve the win.
Hunter had a chance to add to the Tar Heels lead early in the second half when he fired a penalty kick off the crossbar. The Tribe had a late chance thwarted by a pair of Tar Heel defenders, who saved a header by Brock Jones past UNC keeper Justin Hughes before it crossed the goal line,
Hughes went the distance in goal for Carolina, allowing two goals and making two saves. The Wake Forest, N.C., product has now started two of the Tar Heels last three games after not playing in the first 11 matches of the season. Wergley made six stops in goal for the Tribe.
Carolina held the edge in shots, 14-9, and took three corner kicks. The Tar Heels 10th win of the season equals their victory total of 2004.
Freshman defender Tim Evans made his first start for the Tar Heels, who were playing without sophomore Andre Sherard due to a red card received at Maryland. Shriver made his second start of the year.
Carolina returns to Atlantic Coast Conference action at Wake Forest at 7 p.m. Saturday.
