Tar Heels Fall In Four At Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. --- The University of Maryland volleyball team got double-digit kills from four different players en route to a four-game win, 30-17, 25-30, 30-20, 30-24, over visiting North Carolina Friday night at the Comcast Center Pavilion. With the win the Terrapins (19-1, 10-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) take control of the ACC lead, while the Tar Heels (13-7, 8-2) have their six match winning streak snapped.
Carolina played with the lead early in game one, but Maryland tied it at 12-all on a Maggie Schmelzie ace. The Terrapins would blow the game open after that, winning 18 of the next 23 points to cruise to a 30-17 win. The Tar Heels hit -.106 for the frame, collecting just seven kills.
UNC responded in game two, tying the match at one game apiece with a 30-25 win. The second stanza was tight throughout and featured nine ties and nine lead changes. Carolina got two kills from Camilla Ihenetu and one from Amy Beaver to move from a 23-all tie to game point at 29-24. After a Maryland sideout, Dani Nyenhuis put down a kill to end the game and even the match.
The Tar Heels could not build on the momentum, however. After Beaver and Stephanie Jansma teamed up for a block to tie game three at 12-all, Maryland won three straight points and never relinquished the lead. The Terps got a solo block from Jade Brown on game point to take a 2-1 advantage in the match, winning the game, 30-20.
Game four was an offensive showdown, as each team had match highs in kills and hitting percentage. Maryland hit .356 and made just five errors to nullify a .231 frame from UNC. After a back-and-forth start to the game, the hosts pulled away once again. Mary Beth Brown sealed the match with her eighth kill of the night, and the Terps won the final game, 30-24.
Nyenhuis and Ihenetu each had 14 kills for Carolina, while Stephanie Smith led Maryland with 15. Taylor Rayfield had 22 digs for UNC, and Nyenhuis added 15 for a double-double.
The Tar Heels will look to rebound Sunday afternoon as they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to take on Boston College. First serve for the match, which will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools, is set for 1.
