Roy Williams postgame comments after win over UC Santa Barbara
I really liked our defensive play. I thought we were really active on the boards, especially the last five or six minutes. Again, we had two or three shots every time we had it. We didn't shoot it as well; needless to say we didn't shoot it well from the free throw line. I think we'll be good free throw shooters. Couple of weeks ago we had everybody shoot 500 free throws and everybody on the team made over 80 percent. Fourteen out of fourteen guys and three guys made over 90 percent. So I think we're going to be a good free throw shooting team. We just haven't done it yet but I think down the line we will be.
"Tyler was sensational inside with his activity. I thought David Noel was sensational in every phase of the game except his free throws, and I think he's going to be a good free throw shooter. He was so active defensively.
"We didn't do a good job guarding the three in the first half. We went away from our traps a little bit in the second half and tried to play more straight man to man. I think Bob has good club and he really does a nice job with his team. They do a good job on the offensive end. They make you play defense for a long time and I think that's going to help us in the long run."
(what did you say in huddle at 45-41)
"I just talked about we had to have more intensity and be stronger with the basketball and make plays. Quit being sloppy with it. I just thought we were careless...there were a couple of shots where I thought we could have been more aggressive with and taken it a lot more powerfully than we did."
"Tyler is a very aggressive youngster. We have to do a better job of teaching him about how crowded it can get inside. It helps for us to make more shots outside to keep people off of him. For a freshman, he's about as aggressive in going after the ball as anyone I've ever seen. He has a great touch around the basket."
UC Santa Barbara Postgame Quotes
Head Coach Bob Williams:
We knew it was going to be a battle coming in, and you can practice all you want for an intense defense like you saw tonight but just being able to see it was intense. They did a great job defensively, I thought they were really good off the boards, and they destroyed us by getting to the foul line. Their defense created turnovers and their defense got in transition. We stayed in the game a little bit by hitting threes, but we certainly weren't able to sustain it.
I thought we did battle back at times; we learned a lot. I think for a lot of the young players it's a great experience. It's kind of a humbling experience a little bit. They (the players) thought they would come in here and play better than they did.
I think what we did best by far was hitting the three. I thought we tried to bring hard and stay with them and slow them down a little. I think our lack of being able to run an offense killed us defensively. Coach Williams said after the game that it's the best his team has played all year, and I believe that.
