Chapel Hill, N.C. - North Carolina women's golf coach Sally Austin announced Monday the signing of Kate Thomas from Australia who will join the Tar Heel team in the fall of 2006.
"We are thrilled to have Kate join our team next fall," says Austin. "Kate is one of the top junior players in Australia and is also an excellent student. Kate is the type of student-athlete we are looking for here at Carolina. We are happy she will be pursuing golf while earning her degree at Carolina. We believe she will be a great addition to our team."
Thomas, from Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia, was a stellar golfer at MacKillop College and received many academic honors as well. She was the leading qualifier at the 2005 New South Wales Amateur and finished third at the 2005 Mastercard Junior Masters, which is an international event. Thomas was the 2004-05 Combined Catholic Colleges stroke and match play champion and the 2004-05 Western Region Academy of Sports Athlete of the Year. She was selected the 2004 Jack Newton Junior Golfer of the Year and qualified for the 2004 AMMI Australian Open, a professional tournament. Thomas was a member of the 2004 Australian Junior Team and represented Australia at the 2004 Callaway World Junior Championships and at the 2003 Aaron Baddeley World Junior Championships.
