Carolina Opens ACC Men's Soccer Tourney Against NC State

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Ranked as high as No. 4 nationally last week, North Carolina is the No. 6 seed in the 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Championship, which opens Tuesday at SAS Soccer Park in Cary. The Tar Heels - 13-3-2 overall and 3-3-2 in conference action - will face third-seeded NC State (11-5-1, 4-3-1 ACC) at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the quarterfinal round for the third straight season.
Carolina, unbeaten in its last five matches and unscored upon in the last four, played to a 2-2 tie with NC State Sept. 14 at SAS Soccer Park. The Tar Heels and Wolfpack combined for three goals in the final seven minutes of play, with State tying the match with less than a second remaining.
The Tar Heels have not lost to the Pack since 1997 and own an 8-0-3 record over this stretch. Carolina downed NC State, 2-0, in last season's quarterfinal, while the Wolfpack advanced in 2003 on penalty kicks.
Carolina finished in a fifth-place tie with Duke at 3-3-2 in ACC play was assigned the sixth seed due on the league's fourth tie breaker - goals scored in conference games. The Blue Devils scored 16, while the Tar Heels tallied 10. Maryland earned the tourney's top seed.
