The University of North Carolina softball team will open play in the 2005 season this weekend with the annual Triangle Classic. This year's edition is co-hosted by UNC and NC State, and will take place at the UNC Softball Complex in Chapel Hill and the Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh.
The Tar Heels retrun five starting fielders and three starting pitchers from a squad that went 44-22 and finished tied for second in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina also welcomes the return of first baseman Jaclyn Holden, a 2003 All-America who missed 2004 with a shoulder injury.
Temple, Virginia, Radford, East Tennessee State and UNC Wilmington round out the six team pool that will be in action in Chapel Hill. Action starts Friday at 10:30 a.m. with games between ETSU and Radford on the stadium field and UNCW and Virginia on the upper field. Carolina debuts at 3:30 vs. UNCW on the stadium field.
To conclude the event, the Tar Heels will meet conference rival Virginia at 1 p.m. on Sunday. All games are free to the public.
