No. 4 North Carolina improved to 21-3 and 9-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with an 85-61 win over Virginia Wednesday. The 21 victories are the most for Carolina since it won 26 games during the 2000-01 season. The Tar Heels have now won 15 straight at home.
Wednesday's win over Virginia was Carolina's ninth ACC victory of the season, assuring the Tar Heels of their first winning conference mark since the 2000-01 season when UNC went 13-3 and tied for first in the league.
With a 110-76 win over UVa in Charottesville to go along with Wednesday's 85-61 victory, the Tar Heels swept the season series with Cavaliers for the first time since the 1998-99 season and won both games of the season series by 20 or more points in for the first time since 1992-93 (80-58 and 78-58). With two wins over UVa this season, UNC has won four of the last five in the series.
With 17 points and 16 rebounds, junior Sean May recorded his third straight double-double for the first time in his career. He now has four double-doubles in the last five games and six in the last 10. Over the last 10, he is averaging 15.4 points and 12.3 rebounds. May has 18, 13 and 16 rebounds over his last three games for an average of 15.7 boards.
Junior Rashad McCants tied a season high with six assists Wednesday and set a new single-season career best in the process. He now has 69 assists in just 24 games this season, which is good for an average of 2.88 per game. McCants' previous high of 65 assists set in 30 games as a sophomore.
McCants also added 23 points on 9 of 12 shooting versus Virginia for his highest point total since scoring 23 at Clemson. He also cracked the top 20 on Carolina's career scoring list and moved past Jeff Lebo with 1,580 career points.
Senior Jawad Williams had 14 points versus the Cavaliers. He has now scored 31 points over the last two games after totaling just nine points in the three previous outings. Williams now has 1,495 career points and needs just five more to become the 24th Tar Heel with 1,500 career points. McCants joined that club earlier this season.
Junior Raymond Felton had 12 points, five rebounds four assists and three steals versus UVa. Felton now has 14 steals over the last four games, good for a 3.5 per game average.
Senior Melvin Scott had six points and tied a season best with four rebounds. His three offensive rebounds also equaled a season high.
Freshman Quentin Thomas made his first career three-point field goal in the second half.
