Carolina Tied For Third At ACC Championships

ATLANTA, GA. - The North Carolina men's swimming and diving team is in a tie for third place after the opening day of the 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. The Tar Heels have 62 team points after the opening day of competition.
Florida State and Virginia Tech are tied for first place after the first day of competition as each team has scored 64 points. North Carolina and NC State are tied for third place with 62 points. Georgia Tech and Clemson are tied for fifth with 54 points while Maryland has 48 points, Duke 42 points and Virginia 40 points to round out the team scoring at the end of the first day of competition.
UNC's 800-yard freestyle relay took a runnerup finish as the Tar Heels were clocked in 6:32.80. Junior Jon Albrecht led off the relay in his career best time for the 200-yard freestyle (1:38.10) and the relay also consisted of sophomore Casey Kott (1:37.76), junior Chad Ames (1:38.45) and freshman Philip Owen (1:38.49).
The Tar Heels had to settle for a fifth place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:30.34. Albrecht also led off that relay for UNC by swimming the backstroke leg in 22.89. The relay also included sophomore Aaron Burns on the breaststroke leg (25.63), senior Eddy Matkovic on the butterfly leg (21.64) and freshman John Sands on the freestyle leg (20.18).
Virginia's Luke Anderson, Stefan Hirniak, Fran Crippen and Michael Raab won the 800-yard freestyle with an ACC Championship record time of 6:28.03 to open the meet. The victory marked the sixth consecutive year the Cavaliers have won the event at the conference meet.
In the second event of the evening, the 200-yard medley relay, NC State's Kevin Velleca, Dan Velez, Kevin Devine and Cullen Jones set a new ACC and Championship record, clocking a time of 1:27.46.
The Championship will resume tomorrow, with preliminaries beginning at 11:00 a.m. and finals commencing at 7:00 p.m.
