CHAPEL HILL -- Christina Juras scored three times, including two late insurance goals, and had an assist as the University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team defeated Temple, 10-6, on Friday evening at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. Juras set a career high with the three goals.
With the victory, Carolina evened its 2005 record at 1-1 after last Sunday's season-opening loss to No. 3 Northwestern. UNC is ranked No. 8 in the first Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll. Temple is unranked.
Stephanie Scurachio scored twice for the Tar Heels, while Allison Higgins had a goal and an assist. Jess Allen, Chrissy Rude, Meg Freshwater and Erica LaGrow all scored single goals for Carolina. Patty Glavin and Allison Frengs led the Owls with two goals each.
In the first half, the Tar Heels jumped out to a 4-1 lead on goals by Scurachio, Higgins, Juras and Allen. The two teams traded goals from there and Carolina led, 6-5 at halftime. LaGrow scored an unassisted goal 2:05 into the second half to give UNC a 7-5 lead, but Frengs cut the lead back to one goal with a goal just under four minutes later.
From there, Juras' unassisted goals at the 43:25 and 57:34 marks sandwiched a Scurachio goal to make the final margin 10-6 in favor of Carolina.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. vs. George Mason at Fetzer Field.
