RALEIGH, N.C. - Despite being swept in both relay events and falling behind 15-2 after the opening relay, the No. 22 North Carolina men's swimming and diving relay team regrouped to rally for a convincing 154-87 victory over NC State Friday night at Carmichael Natatorium. Carolina won 10 of the 11 individual events in the meet with senior tri-captain Eric Mohr leading the way for UNC with a pair of event wins, both in season best times.
Carolina improved to 10-2 overall with the win and 5-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference after swimming their final dual meet of the campaign. This marks UNC's best overall record since the 1998-99 also finished 10-2 and the 5-1 ACC finish is UNC's best in the league since the 1997-98 team was 5-0.
NC State fell to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the ACC despite wins in both the 400-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.
After Carolina's top relay was disqualified in the 400-yard medley relay and the Wolfpack swept the opening event 1-2 to go up 15-2, UNC freshman Philip Owen jump started the Carolina effort when he touched less than a second ahead of two NC State swimmers in the 1000-yard freestyle to win in 9:26.88. Junior Chad Ames led a 1-2-4 UNC finish in the 200-yard freestyle to put Carolina ahead 28-25. The Wolfpack's Cullen Jones won the 50-yard freestyle for NC State's only win in an individual event, briefly puting State back ahead 37-35.
From then on, the Tar Heels took over the meet, winning eight straght events. It was Eric Mohr starting the rally with his win in the 200-yard individual medley with his season best time of 1:52.77. Freshman Ben Herboth followed with a score of 331.20 in one-meter diving to lead a 1-2-3 UNC sweep of the event. It was the Charlotte, N.C., rookie's high score this season one the one-meter board. Josh Glasco followed with a win by over three seconds in the 200-yard butterfly to start the second half of the meet in the Tar Heels' favor. Sophomore Casey Kott was next in the winner's circle for UNC as he took the 100-yard freestyle in 45.98.
Eric Mohr then took his second first place of the meet as he copped the 200-yard backstroke in a season-best time of 1:50.20. After Reid Owen's dominating six-second win the 500-yard freestyle, Tar Heel junior Ryan Matuszak led another sweep of diving for Carolina as he scored 317.33 on the three-meter board.
UNC's Patrick Woodruff captured the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:02.38, a season best time which now places him fifth on the ACC depth chart in the event this year. State finished off the meet by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:01.30.
