CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina rowing team hosted Williams Friday for a scrimmage at University Lake, the Tar Heels' home water. The UNC varsity eight and novice eight both swept all three of their 1,000-meter pieces while Williams took the novice four competition. Afternoon rain ended shortly after the start of the racing and the teams competed on flat, calm water.
The varsity racing combined the varsity eights and second varsity eights from both teams, and the boats finished in the same order in all three pieces. The Tar Heel varsity eight won all three with times of 3:19.4, 3:23.57 and 3:23.81. The Williams varsity eight was second all three times followed by the UNC second varsity eight and the Williams second varsity eight.
"The varsity eight and second varsity eight did exactly what we asked them to do," Carolina head coach Sarah Haney said. "The second varsity eight had some pretty tough racing against a little bit faster crew. For the varsity eight, it was good for them to see somebody that was obviously very competitive with them, but we were able to race our race and not get frantic and stay really long through the water. Williams is definitely pretty fast, so I felt good about being able to sweep those events."
Racing in the varsity eight were coxswain Terry McCloskey, Lisy McIntee, Cleo Washington, Maegan Wareham, Adriann Spinks, Christin Cotten, Jess Ziebell, Michelle Hall and Julie Domina.
The second varsity eight was made up of coxswain Lauren Portnow, Christina Payne, Laura Rock, Beth Robinson, Emily Dondero, Lucy Barrios, Gretchen Klatte, Clara Leigh and Emily Glunz.
The Carolina novice eight finished with times of 3:34.06, 3:35.35 and 3:35.34. Williams's winning times in the novice four were 3:58.85 and 4:03.79 as the teams rowed just two pieces.
Racing in the UNC novice eight were Alexis Bates (coxswain), Anna DeLoach, Reine Duffy, Hannah Early, Megan Mitzel, Sarah Norris, Chris Tommerdahl, Lauren Eney and Devin Hudson
In the novice four were Tiffany Pierce (coxswain), Caroline Pinkston, Joyce Warrick, Kristen Finch and Lauren Reid.
"I'm excited about the novice eight's performance," UNC novice coach Laura Baylor said. "I thought they showed a lot of aggression on their pieces and did a good job overall. For the novice four, it was their first race so it was a good starting point for them. We have some more things we need to work on, but I thought overall the novice team did a great job today against Williams."
The Tar Heels return to action Saturday, when they host the Carolina Invitational at Lake Wheeler in Raleigh.
