Tar Heels Name Marco Genée Assistant Coach

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Former UNC Pembroke assistant coach Marco Genée has joined the University of North Carolina men's soccer coaching staff, head coach Elmar Bolowich announced Wednesday. Genée will serve as a volunteer assistant coach and will assist in the daily operations of the program.
"Marco is a young energetic coach, who played professionally in Germany," said Bolowich. "He will assist as a volunteer to help our daily operations and will help in promoting our events and scheduling clinics for local youth clubs."
In addition to his work at Carolina, Genée will also coach at the Triangle United Soccer Association and the Olympic Development Center in Chapel Hill. He recently earned a master's degree in sports management from UNCP, where he assisted the men's team from 2003-04. Genée helped lead the team to a 33-4-2 overall record and two trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament, including a Final Four berth in 2004.
Genée is a native of Bremen, Germany, and played with SV Werder Bremen beginning at age 14. He played one semi-pro season with Werder Bremen and then moved on to VfB Oldenburg in 1990. While playing, he studied business and attended the Florida Institute of Technology for a semester. Genée also spent six months in Costa Rica and has worked for Panalpina, Inc., and Mitsubishi Paper.
He holds the DFB (German Soccer Federation) "B" coaching license.
