CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina senior gymnast Amy Williams has been selected as the recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for winter sports. The scholarship is worth $7,500 and was awarded to 56 student-athletes - 28 men and 28 women - who participate in selected sports in all three NCAA divisions.
Williams, from West Chester, Pa., is a biology major with a minor in chemistry. A 2004 inductee into Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society, she plans to attend medical school at the University of Pennsylvania in the fall.
A four-year letterwinner for the Tar Heels, Williams set a school record on vault as a freshman with a 9.95, a mark that currently ranks second in school history. She earned All-EAGL (East Atlantic Gymnastics League) honors as a freshman and twice finished in the top 10 on vault at the EAGL Championships. She was a member of the EAGL All-Academic Team in every year of her career.
Williams received the 2005 ACC Senior Scholar-Athlete Award, which goes to one male and one female student-athlete from each Atlantic Coast Conference school. She also was the recipient of this year's Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete Award for the gymnastics team.
Covering NCAA divisions I, II and III, winter sports scholarship winners come from the sports of women's archery, basketball, women's bowling, fencing, ice hockey, rifle, skiing, women's squash, swimming and diving, women's synchronized swimming, women's team handball, indoor track and field, and wrestling. The NCAA also awards postgraduate scholarships for fall and spring sports.
The only other student from an Atlantic Coast Conference school to be honored for winter sports in 2005 is Clemson's Gisele Oliveria (indoor track and field).
