DURHAM, N.C. -- Katie Chrest tallied three goals and four assists as the Duke women's lacrosse team defeated North Carolina, 15-7, on Sunday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2005 NCAA Tournament at Koskinen Stadium.
Jess Allen and Christina Juras each scored twice for the Tar Heels, who end their season with a record of 14-6. Duke improves to 17-3 and advances to next weekend's Final Four in Annapolis, Md..
The Blue Devils took control quickly, scoring just 24 seconds into the game. Duke led, 4-1, at the 20:01 mark of the first half, forcing a Tar Heel time out. Jess Allen scored UNC's lone goal in that span.
After the Tar Heel timeout, Duke scored three more goals to take a 7-1 lead. The Blue Devils controlled 10 of 14 draws in the first half. Carolina rallied behind goals by Meg Freshwater and Juras, cutting the lead to 8-3 with 8:16 left before halftime. Duke rebuffed the Tar Heel rally, however, scoring twice in the last 1:22 to make it 10-3 at the break.
Coming out of the lockerroom, the Tar Heels seized the momentum and scored three times in less than five minutes to make it 10-6. Juras and Jess Allen both scored in that stretch, as did senior Allison Higgins, playing in her final college game.
Duke stemmed the rally again, however, scoring five of the game's final six goals down the stretch.
Sunday's game also was a Carlyle Cup event in the season-long, all-sport competition between North Carolina and Duke. The Blue Devils earn back 1.0 points in the standings for winning two of three games from Carolina this season. UNC currently leads Duke, 14.5 to 11.5.
