CHICAGO - North Carolina goalkeeper Justin Hughes was named to the 21-man roster for the United States Under-20 Men's National Team that will represent the U.S. at the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in Holland, June 10-July 2. The squad was announced Monday by head coach Sigi Schmid.
Hughes, who will be a junior in Chapel Hill in the fall, is one of three goalkeepers on the roster and he has shutouts in both of his starts in international friendlies. Hughes made four starts for the Tar Heels last season and posted a 1.66 goals against average and notched one shutout. He had six shutouts in nine games as a freshman in 2003.
Hughes was one of three Tar Heels in camp with the team, as forward Corey Ashe and midfielder Michael Harrington both trained with the squad at various points this past winter and spring.
Sophomores Dax McCarty and Adam Sloustcher will also gain international experience this summer, as they will play with the U.S. Under-18 National Team in Portugal and Ireland.
