TUSCON, Ariz. - After helping lead the Tar Heels to a fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, North Carolina infielder Chad Flack, shortstop Josh Horton and outfielder Seth Williams were each named to the 2005 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-America team, as chosen by Collegiate Baseball newspaper and announced Wednesday.
A second-team all-conference choice, Flack hit .335 with a UNC rookie record 15 home runs and 49 runs batted in, which ranked second on the team. He also shared the team lead in slugging at .593. Flack played in 59 games and showed outstanding defense at both first and third base, posting a .979 fielding percentage. He was also named to the NCAA Gainesville Regional all-tournament team after batting .455 with a homer and four RBI.
Also a season-team all-league selection, Horton finished second on the squad with a .347 average and added two homers and 35 RBI. He also shared the team lead with three triples and added 11 doubles. Horton played in 58 games and made 53 starts at shortstop.
Williams finished his rookie campaign with 13 home runs, the second most by a UNC freshman, and 34 RBI, as well as a .280 average. He shared the team slugging lead with Flack at .593 and averaged one homer every 11.5 at-bats. Williams played in 53 games and made 38 starts in center field and right field, where he did not commit an error and was second on the team with two outfield assists.
With this group, Carolina has had at least one Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-America in each of the last three years. Adam Kalkhof earned the honor in 2003, while Daniel Bard did last season. The Tar Heels had not had a position player earn freshman All-America accolades since Adam Greenberg in 2000 and had not had multiple position players honored since Dan Moylan and Ryan Earey in 1998.
