DETROIT - Just one year removed from a remarkable junior season at the University of North Carolina, Modesto Nuts catcher Chris Iannetta has been selected to play in the 2005 XM Satellite Radio All-Star Futures Game at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Detroit Tigers' Comerica Park. The game will be televised by ESPN2 as a part of the 2005 Major League Baseball All-Star Game festivities.
The game features the top minor league prospects in a United States-vs.-World formatted exhibition. Twenty-five-man rosters for both the U.S. and World teams were selected by Major League Baseball Operations and the Major League Scouting Bureau, in conjunction with the 30 major league clubs and Baseball America.
Iannetta, who earned All-America honors and was a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award while at UNC in 2004, is in the midst of an impressive season, just his second in professional baseball. He is batting .292 with nine home runs and 52 runs batted in through 63 games with the Modesto Nuts, a Class A Advanced affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Iannetta, who is slugging .512 and owns a .403 on-base percentage, was a third-round selection of the organization in the 2004 MLB Draft.
