COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - Joining Wade Boggs, Ryne Sandberg and broadcaster Jerry Coleman as inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame Sunday was University of North Carolina alumnus and veteran sportswriter and broadcaster Peter Gammons, recipient of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award, presented annually for meritorious contributions to baseball writing.
SPLENDID SPLINTER'S OBSERVATION: Peter Gammons, recipient of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award for his baseball writing and broadcasting for the Boston Globe, Sports Illustrated and ESPN, recalled a remark Ted Williams once made to him.
"He said, 'Some day you're going to walk down the street and have people say you have the greatest job in America.' Well, Ted, it happens almost every day. And for that I thank all of you, everyone who read or listened to me, allowed me to find what I love and hold onto it long enough to experience this, the greatest day of my professional career."
