WILMINGTON, N.C. - Freshman forward Stephen Bickford headed in the game-winning goal off junior forward Ben Hunter's corner kick at 83:00 to give North Carolina a 2-1 exhibition win against UNC Wilmington in front of a packed crowd of 2,027 at the UNCW Soccer Stadium Saturday night.
The Seahawks kick off their regular season Thursday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m., at UNC Greensboro as part of the UNCG/Davidson adidas Classic. The Tar Heels begin their 2005 campaign at Virginia Commonwealth with an 8 p.m. start, Sept. 2.
UNCW scored first when freshman forward Tim Masters took a feed from junior midfielder Chris Murray and knocked in a goal past goalkeeper Justin Hughes at 5:17 to give the Seahawks a 1-0 advantage.
After the Seahawks committed a foul inside their own box, Hunter capitalized on the resulting penalty kick, at 15:42, to tie the game at 1-all.
UNCW managed nine shots, two of them on goal, while the Tar Heels countered with 13 shots, guiding four on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Brad Knighton played 61:48 in front of the Seahawk net with one save. Classmate Mike Shaugness played the final 28:12 in goal also recording one stop.
UNC split the game between two goalkeepers, Hughes playing the first 45 minutes followed by Ford Williams in the second half. Hughes made the lone save on the evening.
