Carolina Rolls Past Virginia Tech in ACC Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- Senior outside hitter Dani Nyenhuis recorded her second straight double-double and the Tar Heels out hit the Hokies .358 to .093 as the University of North Carolina volleyball team won its Atlantic Coast Conference opener, 30-18, 30-25, 30-12, over Virginia Tech Friday night at the Dean Smith Center. Carolina improves to 6-5, 5-1 in the ACC, while Virginia Tech falls to 5-5, 0-1 in league play.
The Hokies ran out to a 6-3 lead before UNC tied the score at 10-all. Carolina would not trail again, as the Tar Heels hit a sparkling .424 for the game to cruise to a 30-18 win. Sophomore middle Christie Clark led the way, tallying six kills on seven errorless swings for an .857 hitting percentage.
Once again in game two, Virginia Tech posted a quick 6-3 lead, and once again the Tar Heels quickly made up the deficit. After leading at 10-7, Carolina fell victim to a 7-1 Hokie run to fall behind 14-11. But the Virginia Tech lead would be shortlived, as UNC ran off seven straight to take an 18-14 lead. The Hokies would never get closer than two again, and the Tar Heels built a 2-0 lead with a 30-25 win.
Game three saw Carolina take the early advantage, and it quickly spelled the end of the match. Virginia Tech used its final timeout at 16-5 and never threatened, as the Tar Heels clinched the match with a 30-12 win. Carolina needed just 13 kills in the game as the visitors hit -.027 for the frame.
Clark led the Tar Heels with 15 kills and a career-best .609 hitting percentage. Nyenhuis and fellow senior Camilla Ihenetu each added 10 kills, while Nyenhuis led the way with 17 digs.
Carolina returns to action Saturday with a 6 p.m. tilt against the Virginia Cavaliers.
