Carolina Continues Winning Ways at Second Day of UNC Fall Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Tar Heels completed another successful day of play at the UNC Fall Invitational Saturday, sending three singles players and two doubles teams to the finals of their respective flights.
In the Blue Singles Flight, sophomore Karl Wishart defeated Charlotte's Ryan Johnson 6-4, 6-3 and Aleksey Kochetov of East Carolina 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the finals. He will face Radford's Brandon Johnson Sunday for the championship.
Sophomore Will Plyler defeated Richmond's Brett Waikart 6-1, 6-4 and High Point's James Trussler 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the finals of the Yellow Singles Flight. He will take on Arthur Vasarevic of Radford Sunday.
Junior Lenny Gullan was declared the winner of the Red Singles Flight after his opponent, Carlos Campo of Campbell University, withdrew. Gullan posted victories over High Point's Dave Perren 0-6, 7-6, 6-3 and Navy's Brandon Carter 6-2, 6-3 to reach the finals. The South African native was in dire straits in his match against Perren, trailing 0-6, 4-5 before saving six match points in the 10th game of the second set and then rallying to win that set in a tiebreaker and then going on to claim the ultimate set.
In doubles play, Gullan will team with sophomore David Stone in the finals of the A Flight against Charlotte's Stuart Lynas and Ryan Johnson Sunday after defeating James Lloyd and Martin Sayer of Radford as well as Charlotte's Dorian Host and Roy Sichel 8-1.
The team of senior Aly Mandour and sophomore Jeff Schroeder enjoyed similar success in the B Flight defeating Navy's Carter and Nate Nelms 8-5 and High Point's Jack Notton and Trussler 8-5. Mandour and Schroeder will face Davidson's team of Phillip Compeau and Flavio Simihainan in the finals Sunday.
