RICHMOND, Va. - Three different Tar Heels scored, and the defense posted its second consecutive shutout to give No. 11/17 North Carolina to a 3-0 victory over Richmond and UNC head coach Elmar Bolowich his 200th career win Sunday at the Alltel/Nike Classic at VCU's Sports Backers Stadium.
Junior Corey Ashe and freshmen Stephen Bickford and Scott Campbell provided the offense for Carolina, which held a 2-0 lead just nine minutes into the match. Campbell also added an assist and junior defender David Boole chipped in with two assists.
The win over the Spiders (1-1-0), lifts Bolowich's career mark to 200-112-20 in 17 seasons. He is already the all-time winningest coach in Carolina men's soccer history and guided the Tar Heels to the 2001 NCAA title. UNC (2-0-0) opened its season with a 1-0 win over No. 11/12 VCU Friday.
A Virginia Beach, Va., native, Ashe gave Carolina a 1-0 lead in just the fifth minute of play when he scored on a header off Boole's first assist of the day. Less than four minutes later, Bickford pushed the Tar Heel advantage to 2-0 when he netted a header off the foot of Campbell for his first collegiate goal.
Carolina took its 2-0 lead into intermission, and Campbell provided the final goal of the day for the Tar Heels at 55:26 when he scored on a one-timer from 12 yards out off Boole's second assist of the game and third of the young season.
The Tar Heels, who fired 20 shots on the day, limited Richmond to just three shots and six corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Ford Williams picked up his second shutout and the 17th of his career without having to make a save. Carolina kept the pressure on Spider goalkeeper Eric Sciocchetti throughout the afternoon, and he allowed three goals but made 11 stops.
UNC opens its home schedule next weekend at the Carolina Nike Classic, which also features Wake Forest, Rutgers and South Carolina. The Tar Heels face the Scarlet Knights and 7:30 p.m. Friday and host the Gamecocks at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, September 11.
