CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - On the heels of a pair of shutout wins at the Alltel/Nike Classic in Richmond, Va., the North Carolina men's soccer team has vaulted into the top five of both major national polls this week. The Tar Heels currently are ranked No. 2 in the NSCAA Coaches' Poll and No. 5 by Soccer America.
Carolina's No. 2 ranking by the NSCAA marks its highest since September 3, 2002, when it was ranked second in both polls. The Tar Heels opened the season with a 1-0 win over then-No. 11 VCU and followed with a 3-0 victory over Richmond. UNC last opened with back-to-back blankings in 1991 wins over Connecticut and Jacksonville.
Four different Tar Heels scored over the weekend, and senior Ford Williams posted a pair of shutouts in goal. Junior defender David Boole assisted on three goals and was named ACC Player of the Week and to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. Boole and freshman Scott Campbell share the scoring lead with three points.
Carolina makes its home debut this weekend at the Carolina Nike Classic. The Tar Heels host Rutgers at 7:30 p.m. Friday and South Carolina at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
