CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's tennis team got off to a solid 2-0 start to its 2006 dual-match season last weekend and the upcoming three days will continue a competitive and busy January schedule for the Tar Heels.
North Carolina will host the No. 51 Northwestern Wildcats on Friday night at 6 p.m. in an indoor match at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center located on Skakle Drive behind the Friday Center off N.C. State Road 54. Admission is free.
The Tar Heels, No. 31 in the current FILA Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, will be looking to avenge a 5-2 loss suffered last year against the Wildcats at Evanston Ill.
North Carolina will also host a men's tennis doubleheader on Sunday with matches indoors against Gardner-Webb at 1 p.m. and North Carolina A&T at 6 p.m. Again, admission to all North Carolina men's tennis matches is free.
The weekend will conclude a busy five-match January schedule for Coach Sam Paul's club. UNC is a veteran team at the top of the lineup this year with seniors Raian Luchici, Brad Pomeroy and Derek Porter manning the No. 1-3 spots in the lineup. A junior, a sophomore and a freshman filled out the singles lineup in wins over Campbell and Elon last Saturday, both by the maximum 7-0 decision. The Tar Heels failed to drop a single set in the doubleheader victories over the Camels and Fighting Phoenix.
UNC is also looking forward to the return to the lineup of sophomore Benjamin Carlotti from injury. Carlotti had a magnificent freshman year in 2004-05 and he is currently ranked in the ITA Top 100 along with Luchici, who possesses the No. 5 singles ranking. Luchici and Pomeroy are also the No. 1 doubles team in the current rankings as the senior duo has started its 2005-06 season in dynamic fashion with finalist and semifinalist finishes at two of the ITA's national fall tournaments.
