ANNAPOLIS, Md. - An injury-depleted North Carolina wrestling squad dropped two tough duals on the road Saturday, falling at Maryland and at No. 19 Navy. The Tar Heels, who fell 24-18 to Maryland in College Park and then dropped a 41-4 match to the Midshipmen in Annapolis, are now 12-8-1 on the season, including an 0-2-1 record in Atlantic Coast Conference action.
Redshirt freshman Vincent Ramirez led the Tar Heels Saturday with a pair of wins to improve his record to 31-6 on the season and 16-1 duals. He opened the day with a 5-1 over Alex Krom of Maryland and followed with a 12-1 major decision over Navy's Spencer Manley for Carolina's lone win versus the Midshipmen.
Riddled by injuries, Carolina forfeited four matches against Navy, giving the Midshipmen 24 of their 41 points. The Tar Heels also dropped two bouts to Navy in overtime. In a meeting of the of the nation's top heavyweights UNC's Spencer Nadolsky, ranked 12th nationally, dropped a 3-1 overtime decision to Navy's Tanner Garrett, who is ranked seventh. The defeat snapped a 21-match winning streak for Nadolsky, who last lost at the Nov. 26 Carolina Open. He is now 34-3 this season.
Junior Deon Barrett also dropped an overtime match versus Navy, losing to Craig Dziewiatkowski, 7-5 in extra action.
Earlier in the day at Maryland, the Tar Heels, who forfeited two bouts in this match, rallied from a 15-6 deficit after four bouts to tie the dual at 15. However, the Terps won three of the final four matches to secure the win and improve to 3-0 in ACC action.
Ramirez posted the 5-1 win over Krom, and Britton followed with a pin in 1:55 of Andrew Schlaffer at 149.
