Chapel Hill, N.C. - Former Carolina golfer, Kimberly Lewellen, known as Kimberly Byham when she played for the Tar Heels 1990-93, was recently named the head women's golf coach at East Carolina University.
"I had a wonderful golf career while playing at UNC under Coach Dot Gunnells," says Lewellen. "My wish for each player at ECU is that they enjoy their time as a student-athlete while reaching their goal as a champion golfer."
Prior to becoming the head coach of the Pirates, Lewellen served as the head men's and women's golf coach at The Citadel during the 2003-04 season. She also played on the Future's Professional Golf Tour, the Women's European Professional Golf Tour and served as a teaching professional. Lewellen captured the championship at the 1997 Briarwood Invitational while playing on the Future's Tour.
During her collegiate career at Carolina, Lewellen, who was named a first-team All-America in `93, won the 1993 NCAA East Regional. She also won the Woodbridge Collegiate in 1993 and the Lady Tar Heel Invitational in 1992. In 2002, Lewellen, who was named to the 1992 and 1993 All-Atlantic Coast Conference teams, was one of 12 former Carolina golfers selected to the ACC 50th Anniversary Women's Golf Team.
Lewellen and her husband, John, have two children.
