COLUMBUS, OHIO --- North Carolina senior Jenna Long defeated defending NCAA singles champion Suzi Babos of California to open the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Thursday at The Racquet Club of Columbus. Long and fellow senior Sara Anundsen teamed up to defeat Northwestern's Georgia Rose and Alexis Prousis.
Long, currently ranked No. 27 in the nation by the ITA, dropped No. 12 Babos in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. In addition to being the defending NCAA singles champion and the No. 1 seed in the tournament, Babos also claimed the ITA All-American Championships title last month. Long will face LSU's Megan Falcon in the second round.
Long and Anundsen, the nation's top-ranked doubles tandem and the tournament's No. 3 seed, knocked off Rose and Prousis, 8-5. They will meet Kentucky's Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk in the quarterfinals. The Tar Heel duo will be looking to avenge a loss to Coventry and Schwenk in last month's ITA Southeast Regional.
