RALEIGH --- Megan Owens had a match-high 11 kills and Stephanie Jansma had a double-double as North Carolina scored its 20th straight win over NC State, 30-21, 30-16, 30-18, Tuesday night at Reynolds Coliseum. Jansma had 34 assists to go with 10 digs, while Brianna Eskola added a match-high 16 digs.
Carolina (7-18, 5-11 Atlantic Coast Conference) sprinted out to a quick 8-2 lead in game one and never looked back, cruising to a 30-21 win. NC State (2-23, 0-16 ACC) was its own worst enemy, committing 14 attack errors and hitting -.128 for the frame. Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland led the way for the Tar Heels with four kills, while Owens and Amy Beaver chipped in three each.
Game two featured another fast start for UNC, with Owens pounding out four kills in the first ten points. But this time NC State would respond. A solid blocking effort and the hitting of Chrissy Zirpolo fueled a 10-4 run that tied the score at 12.
Just as quickly as the Wolfpack tied it, however, Carolina started to pull away. Aided by six Wolfpack errors, the Tar Heels won 10 of the next 12 points to take a 22-14 lead and force an NC State timeout. The Wolfpack got no closer than eight and a Brianna Eskola ace ended it, 30-16. Carolina hit .333 for the frame, recording 17 kills and committing just four attack errors.
UNC opened up game three with a 10-1 run that effectively put the game out of reach. The Tar Heels rolled to a 30-18 win that sealed the three-game sweep. For the second straight frame, Carolina hit .333, while NC State finished in negative numbers for the second time.
Carolina returns to the court Friday night at 6 against Clemson.
