CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's All-Atlantic Coast Conference defenders Andre Sherard and Michael Harrington each earned a second postseason honor Monday when they were named to Top Drawer Soccer's Men's College Team of the Season. Sherard was selected to the first team, while Harrington grabbed a spot on the fourth team.
Both from Greenville, N.C., Sherard and Harrington are key components of a Carolina defense that has posted eight shutouts and logged a 0.76 goals against average this season. With Sherard in the lineup at his center back position, the Tar Heels have surrendered just 10 goals by the opposition on the season. He has started 18 of 19 matches this year and 62 of a possible 64 games since beginning his collegiate career in 2004. Sherard is a two-time All-ACC selection.
Harrington has tallied six points on one goal and four assists from his outside back position and has started 18 games. His lone goal was the game-winner against Quinnipiac Sept. 12. A second-team All-ACC choice for the second year in a row, Harrington leads all current Tar Heels with 14 career assists and has totaled 22 points over the last four seasons. He has made 80 career starts.
Carolina earned the No. 14 seed in the 2006 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship and will face either Old Dominion or Winthrop at Fetzer Field Nov. 15. Tickets are on sale now at TarHeelBlue.com.
