Tar Heels Finish Eighth at Lady Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, P.R. - The North Carolina Women's Golf team opened the spring season with an eighth place finish at the the 2006 Lady Puerto Rico Classic held at Coco Beach Golf Club. Sophomore Ann Laney led all Tar Heels with a third-place finish among the 87 individual golfers. The University of Florida finished on top of the leaderboard with a three-round total of 885.
In the third and final round, North Carolina shot a 308 and finished with a 48-over-par final score of 912 to place eighth among the 16-team field. Tulsa finished one stroke ahead of the Tar Heels with a score of 911. Florida maintained its lead to capture the team medal with a score of 21-over 885. Purdue finished two strokes behind the Gators in second, with a score off 887, while Arkansas finished in third at a total of 888.
In the battle for individual honors, Arkansas' Amanda McCurdy increased her one-stroke lead over Carolina's Ann Laney to finish in first place with a score of two-under 214. Laney's first-round score of 68 placed her at the top of the leaderboard heading into Saturday. The four-under par performance included a hole-in-one, the first of Laney's career. On Saturday she fired a one-over 73, leaving her in second place heading into the final round on Sunday. Laney fired a 77 in the final round, dropping to third-place with an overall score of 218. Florida's Whitney Myers finished two strokes in front of her to clinch second place.
Carolina's Lauren Hunt andKatie Miller also played well for the Tar Heels. Hunt, a freshman from Little River, S.C., finished the tournament in a tie for 22nd with a 9-over 225, posting a pair of 74's in the first two rounds. Miller, a junior out of Jeannette, Pa., carded a 74 in the final round to finish tied for 40th overall with a 232.
The Tar Heels return to action on March 3 when they travel to Baton Rouge, La. for the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic.
