Chapel Hill, N.C. - Two former Carolina golfers, Kimberly Lewellen and Ashley Prange, will compete in this season's The Big Break V, The Golf Channel's popular reality series. The first episode will premiere Feb. 7 at 9 p.m.
Eleven golfers will compete in the ladies only series and vie for a chance to revitalize their golfing careers and be awarded the opportunity to play professional golf against the world's best on the LPGA Tour. This season's event takes place at the Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu's North Shore in Hawaii.
Lewellen, known as Kimberly Byham when she played for Carolina 1990-93, was recently named the head women's golf coach at East Carolina University. She has played on the Future's Professional Golf Tour and the Women's European Professional Golf Tour. While at Carolina, Lewellen was a first-team All-America in 1993 and two-time member of the All-Atlantic Coast Conference team (`92 and `93). She won three collegiate tournaments, including the 1993 NCAA East Regional. In 2002, Lewellen was one of 12 former Carolina golfers selected to the ACC 50th Anniversary Women's Golf Team.
Prange played on the 2001-04 Carolina women's golf teams. She was a two-time All-America, first team in 2004 and honorable mention in 2003, and a three-time All-ACC performer, 2002, 2003, 2004. Prange captured three collegiate titles, winning the 2004 Lady Gamecock Classic, the 2004 LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic and the 2002 Mercedes-Benz Championship. She was a semi-finalist at the 2003 Women's Western Amateur Championship. Prange, who played on the Futures Tour in 2005, comes from a golfing family as her father and three of her uncles are teaching professionals.
The Big Break show concept pits highly skilled golfers against each other in a variety of challenges that test their physical skills and mental toughness. One golfer is eliminated from the series each week, with the last golfer standing awarded his/her "Big Break," a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete in select professional tour events with some of the best golfers in the world.
In addition to Lewellen and Prange, this season's cast includes Jeanne Cho, Nicolle DiSanto, Divina Delasin, Jo D. Duncan, Dana Lacey, Becky Lucidi, Kristina Tucker, Katie Ruhe and Julie Wells.
